Breaking Through Culminating Project Options
By now, each of your have selected one of the following projects. For a description of each project, please see below, and each option will be followed by it's corresponding rubric.
All CPs are due on 11/20
Option 1 - Create a sculpture of a character. Use any combination of soap, wood, clay, sticks, wire, stones, old toy pieces, or any other object. Include an explanation of how the character develops throughout the book.
Requirements:
Requirements:
- Size - It should be around the size of a Barbie doll, so that it is large enough to display and present, but not so large that it takes up too much space.
- Color - All sculptures should have a good use of color. If you choose colors that are unexpected or odd (for example - green hair), you MUST justify those choices in the written explanation. In other words, tell me how the color is symbolic or what it represents about the character.
- Final version - It must be typed. YOU must print it out. You may NOT email this to me. The page should be double-spaced, size 12 font, and in either Times New Roman or Arial. Please title it “Written Explanation.”
- Length - The written explanation must be at least a page long (front only).
- Your explanation should have two parts -
- Explain your sculpture design (How did you make it?)
- Explain your sculpture’s connection to Breaking Through. (How does it represents your chosen character from the book? How did that character develop throughout the book?)
Option 1 Rubric
Option 2 - Write a diary the main character might have kept before, during, or after a particular event in the novel. Remember that a person’s thoughts and feelings are very important in a diary (1st POV).
Requirements::
Requirements::
- Final version - It must be typed. YOU must print it out. You may NOT email this to me. The page should be double-spaced, size 12 font, and in either Times New Roman or Arial.
- Length - The diary must be no less than 15 entries. Each entry must be at least 8 sentences long. I would suggest you you break up the entries into 5 entries Francisco would have written before your chosen event, 5 entries during, and 5 entries after.
- You must write in 1st person point of view (writing with the voice and perspective of Francisco at the age he would have been during your choses event from Breaking Through.)
- Remember, in the novel Francisco liked to describe his experiences with many details. Be sure to include how his feelings might change before, during, and after your chosen event.
Option 3 - Dramatize a scene from the text. Write a script and have several rehearsals before presenting it to class. (Group of 2 or 4)
Requirements:
Requirements:
- Final version - It must be a typed script (1 script per group). YOU must print it out. You may NOT email this to me. The page should be double-spaced, size 12 font, and it should follow the rules of a typical stage play script. For information about how to format a stage script, visit this website: http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/writersroom/scripts/stageus.pdf.
- List of group members responsibilities - At the end of your script, you must include a description of who contributed what in your project. Group members who do not share in the workload will lose points on their project. Each member should have an equal amount of work, but it is up to you to divide it among your team.
- Rehearsals - In order to make sure your scene is about five minutes long, you will need to have several rehearsals to practice delivering the lines back and forth (time yourselves when you practice).
- Presentation of Scene-
- Length - Your script presentation should be about five minutes in length.
- Space - Keep in mind that we can move the desks back only a little bit for more space up front, so plan accordingly.
- Props - You must have any hand props that your script describes. For the setting, you may tell the class where we are before you begin the scene. There is no need to create a set.
- Acting - This scene is not to be treated as a joke. If you pick a scene with funny parts in it, that is one thing, but do not pick a serious scene in the book and try to turn it into a comedy. Your grade will be penalized for not being accurate.
- Length - Your script presentation should be about five minutes in length.
Option 4 - Make an illustrated timeline showing events of the story and draw a map showing the location(s) of where the story took place.
Requirements:
- Size - Your timeline should have at least 15 events from the story included.
- For each event, you must have: 1) a title, 2) a 2-3 sentence summary of the event, and 3) an illustration (original artwork/drawings).
- Since it is a timeline, be sure your events are listed in order from left to right.
- Color - All entries should have a good use of color.
- For the map, you must have all the places (cities) that Francisco visits in the book represented. You will want to consult an atlas, so that you have a basic understanding of how the cities/states/countries relate to each other on your map.
Option 5 - Create a mini-comic book or children’s book simplifying and summarizing a chapter of the textbook or novel.
Requirements:
- Length - You must have at least 15 pictures that represent the events within your chosen chapter.
- If you do a comic book, there must be dialogue or thoughts shown in bubbles above the characters heads.
- If you do a children’s book, there must be a simplified written description next to each picture (something that represents what a parent might read to their child).
- For both, you must have an illustrated title page.
- All pictures must have color.
(There is not longer an Option 6)
Option 7 - Create a newspaper about the text, with various newspaper parts: headline, comics, ads, weather, letter to the editor, etc.
